I was looking at the tech specs of D2 on GFS and see that if you take it to 1020 degrees C you can simply air cool and... job done.
Anyone got thoughts on air cooling? Feels like a nice easy way of doing it.
Sorry this got missed for so long. I used D2 early on and I noticed a SIGNIFICANT difference between Air/plate and oil hardness and edge retention.
Air quenched with just air compressor nozzle was the softest. I could still scratch it with a file.
Plate quenched with air nozzle was harder. file skated.
Oil quenched in canola heated to 115-125 Degreed F was hardest. and took the most elbow grease to sand clean.
Try it with a few coupons or a couple small blanks and see what performs best for your design and process! Document all the way so you can repeat what works!
